Climate change, pollution, biodiversity loss and other global issues are dominating the headlines. Preserving nature has become more vital than ever. The importance of environmental health to human well-being is often overlooked. Action to conserve our natural ecosystems does not simply represent a noble act, it is also one which benefits all of us, irrespective of culture, background or geography.
The HDI Six Nations demonstrate that taking action to preserve the environment leads to higher quality of life, showing the world that sustainable practices benefit not just the planet, but the well-being of all people.
The benefits of a healthy ecosystem include clean air and water, fertile ground, stable weather, and a variety of other essentials. In protecting forests and other ecosystems such as wetlands or oceans we protect life-supporting systems. In addition to protecting public health by reducing outbreaks of disease, it also helps ensure economic stability and food security.
As well, environmental initiatives inspire innovation, promote community resilience, create green jobs and contribute to stronger social structures. The countries that are investing in conservation, renewable energy and sustainable practices not only do less harm to our planet but they’re creating a path to a healthy, more equitable, future.
Nature conservation isn’t a question of choice. It’s an absolute necessity. Preserving the environment protects people, strengthens communities, ensures that future generations will have a healthy world. Protecting the Earth is a way to protect yourself. The true definition of the term global win/win is to protect both.
